Tennis Has Strong Showing At New England Championships

The Providence College women's tennis team concluded play at the New England Championships on Saturday, October 18 in Fairfield, Conn. The event was hosted by Fairfield and Sacred Heart. In singles play, the women were 7-4 in matches and including doubles play, they combined to go 10-6 overall in the tournament. The singles championship matches were not contested due to weather.
In singles action, Freshman Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) continued her strong play at the No.1 position by taking down Rebecca McMullin of Sacred Heart in the first round, 8-3, and Paulina Rys of Fairfield, 8-3. In No.2 singles, Ayushi Sinha (Mumbai, India) defeated familiar foe, Katie Francazio of Bryant in a hard fought match that came down to a tiebreak, 9-8 (7-3). Senior captain Jen Cusack (Bayport, N.Y.) made short work of her first opponent, Michelle Aptekin of Sacred Heart, by a score of 8-1 and then defeated Kate McCabe of Bryant, 8-6, in the second round of action.
In doubles play, the Friars' freshmen duo of Courtney Burek (Wheaton, Ill.) and Brittany Maddock (Marietta, Ga.) were unstoppable through the first two rounds of No.3 doubles, as they downed Merrimack, 8-0, in the first round and Sacred Heart in the second round, 8-1. In the championship match, Burek and Maddock fell to Fairfield's Nicolette Jackson and Alyssa Ruiz.
The Friars look to continue their strong play next week as they compete in the ITA Championships held from Friday, October 23 to Tuesday, October 27 in New Haven, Conn.
