PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving team opens their 2009-10 season on Saturday, October 17 at home in the Taylor Natatorium against Lehigh University at 7:00 p.m. The Friars look to avenge their loss to the Mountain Hawks from last year, when Lehigh defeated both the men's and women's teams in Providence's season opener.
The men's team will rely on two-time Horace Bowden Award winner, senior Matthew Card (Bow, N.H.) to post impressive times in the 100m breaststroke and the 100m butterfly. Senior Tim Reilly (Floral Park, N.Y.) will look to improve upon his Providence College record setting time of 17:43:20 in the 1500y freestyle set in January of 2009. The Friars also will look to juniors Jordan Emerick (Southington, Conn.) and James Cebulski (Trumbull, Conn.) for the diving events.
The women's team will be led by senior captain Carrie Lamb (New Paltz, N.Y.). Lamb specializes in freestyle and backstroke events. Junior Courtney Larcom (Morristown, N.J.) and sophomore Caroline Caliri (Marblehead, Mass.) hope to make a splash this season after an impressive showing at the spring 2009 BIG EAST Championships. Larcom set the school record last year in the 1650y freestyle event in a final time of 17:47:22. The team also will be helped by senior diver Ryann Dillon (Downington, Pa.) who looks to score high marks with the judges.
The men's team add freshmen Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I), Marc Freda (Lincroft, N.J.), Ben Kardian (Valhalla, N.Y.), Chris Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Jeffrey Zak (Clifton, N.J.) to their squad after losing five seniors from last year, including senior captain Ryan Clark.
The women's team add freshmen Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.), Eileen Colliton (Bloomfield, Conn.), Samantha Coyle (Pearl River, N.Y.), Allison Curran (Wethersfield, Conn.), Amie Fracker (Trumbull, Conn.), Kelly Lamoreaux (East Greenwich, R.I.), Nicole Monanian (Manahawkin, N.J.), Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.), Alana Reidy (Garden City, N.Y.), Sam Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Jenna Zullo (Branford, Conn.) to their squad after losing four seniors from last year.
