It's an exciting weekend in Friartown. This Saturday, January 17th at 3:00 p.m. we will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Joe Calabria Hallway of Legends and the new men's basketball offices and locker room in Alumni Hall. The event will begin with a blessing by Providence College President, Reverend Brian J. Shanley, O.P. '80 and tours of the new facility will be given from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Admission is FREE for all fans.
This renovation project became a reality in January of 2009 when the Joe and Sugar Calabria Hallway of Legends was completed. Consisting of nine exhibit areas and seven display cases, the hallway features players and teams from each era of the 82-year history of the Providence College basketball program. The hallway's floor is a replica of the Friars' Dave Gavitt Court at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and the project also includes a complete renovation of the coaching staff's offices, the film room and the team's locker room.
The Annual Providence College Men's Alumni Basketball Game will also take place this Saturday at the Dunkin' Donuts Center from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The game will feature former Friar greats including Harold Starks '86, Rob Phelps '94 and Charlie Burch '07. Honorary coaches for the game will be Friar legends Ernie DiGregorio '73 and Marvin Barnes '74.
Also this weekend, the Friars will face the UMass Minutemen on Friday, January 16 in Amherst, Mass. This game comes after the Providence College men's hockey team's 4-2 upset victory over second-ranked Boston University Tuesday night at Agganis Arena. It marked PC's first win over BU since November 17, 2006. It also marked PC's third consecutive triumph.
In other news, the Providence College men's and women's basketball teams will be featured on the syndicated television program "Inside The BIG EAST" in the upcoming week. The show will air on Cox Thursday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, January 17 at 11:30 a.m. and Monday, January 19 at 7:00 p.m.
