The Providence College Friars (15-15, 6-12 BIG EAST) lost to the Villanova Wildcats (19-11, 9-9 BIG EAST) 73-63 Saturday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Junior center Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) led the Friars with 18 points and six rebounds. Guard Jeff Xavier (Pawtucket, R.I.) added 14 points.
Junior guard Weyinmi Efejuku (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) also finished in double-figures, posting 14 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Forward Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
PC pulled to 38-36 with 15:41 to play, but a 7-0 Villanova run stretched the lead to 45-36 with 13:28 remaining.
Providence was able to win the battle of the paint against the Wildcats, as the Friars finished with 36 points to Villanova's 18. PC, however, lost the battle of the boards, 37-29.
Villanova used a 9-1 run midway through the first half to turn a tie game into a 23-15 lead. The Friars got within three, but the Wildcats were able to maintain a 34-28 halftime lead.
Despite the loss, the Friars can still earn the 12th and final spot in next week's BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. If DePaul loses at Pittsburgh (Sunday, Noon on Cox), Providence will earn the bid by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Blue Demons and play on Wednesday, March 12.
