Providence Finishes 47th In Learfield Sports Directors' Cup

Providence College finished 64th out of 187 Division I colleges and universities in the 2008 Fall Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, racking up 85 points. Stanford University, which has won the Directors’ Cup 14 times, sits at the top of the rankings after compiling 394 points over the fall season.
The Friars were led by men’s and women’s cross country. The Providence men’s cross country team tallied 34 points for their 20th place finish at the NCAA Championships, while the women earned 51 for their 13th place finish.
Among BIG EAST Conference members, Providence College ranked seventh. Notre Dame led the conference with its 14th place finish, tallying 237 points. West Virginia (21st), Villanova (30th), Georgetown (40th), and South Florida (41st) rounded out the top five BIG EAST finishes.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
