Dear Friar Fans,
There is a lot going on in Friartown. As the fall season is nearing its end, some critical games are arising for our fall sports teams. For the third consecutive season, our men's soccer team will host the BIG EAST Championship. The squad will be playing in the First Round of the tournament against Villanova on Wednesday at 2:00 pm on Glay Field. The Friars will be making their 10th appearance in the BIG EAST Championship, including their fourth consecutive trip. Providence clinched a home BIG EAST Championship First Round match with a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh, on Saturday, November 1.
On Saturday, over 150 people attended the grand opening of the Joyce Murphy men's soccer suite. This beautiful new suite was made possible thanks to the $50,000 gift provided by soccer alum and friend, Mr. John Murphy.
With the help of Joe Canavan `65, his wife, MaryBeth, and their family's generosity, the Friar Athletic Department is also proud to announce the grand opening of the Canavan Sports Medicine Facility. Our President Rev. Brian Shanley, and myself hosted the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Oct. 17. The facility features a new rehabilitation area, physician examination rooms, office space for the staff, and a hydrotherapy room which includes a SwimEx rehab pool and two plunges for cold/hot therapy.
Our men's and women's cross country teams are ranked among the top-30 in the nation! With the women's team ranked 24th in the nation and our men's team standing strong at 27th, both teams entered the BIG EAST Championships with big expectations and didn't fail to deliver. Both teams finished fourth in the team standings. On the women's side, the Friars were led individually by senior Danette Doetzel, who finished sixth overall. On the men's side, Providence was paced by sophomore David McCarthy. McCarthy finished third and was the first sophomore in the field of 14 teams to cross the finish line.
Our women's field hockey team concluded its regular-season with a win over No. 17 Massachusetts on Saturday, November 1. The Friars will begin BIG EAST Tournament play on Saturday, November 8 as the No. 4 seed and will play top-seeded Syracuse at 11:00 a.m. in Hartford, Conn.
Our women's soccer team just concluded their season with a 3-2 victory over the Syracuse Orange on Sunday, October 26 at Glay Field. All six seniors were honored before the game for their dedication to the Friar women's soccer program.
Seniors volleyball players, Jeanette Toney and Elizabeth Flynn were selected to the NJIT Halloween Classic All-Tournament Team on Saturday, November 1. The two middle blockers led the Friars to a 1-2 record in the tournament on October 31 and November 1. The Friars next play at home against Quinnipiac on Saturday, November 8 at 1:00 p.m. in Mullaney Gymnasium. Prior to the match, the team's five seniors will be honored for their contributions to the program.
With our fall sports wrapping up and proceeding to post season, our winter sports are just getting started. Our men's hockey team lost two hard fought battles against the UMass Minutemen this weekend in a wild Hockey East weekend.
Our women's ice hockey team earned its second Hockey East victory of the season as they defeated the University of Maine, 4-2. The squad returned to action this past Saturday and earned a point in the Hockey East standings with a 3-3 tie against #8 Boston University.
We are also so excited for our men's basketball season to begin. The Providence College men's basketball team opened its season with an 85-57 exhibition win over the University of Ottawa on Saturday. Senior Jonathan Kale led the Friars with 15 points and nine rebounds. The squad finishes their exhibition schedule this Saturday against Slippery Rock at 7:00 p.m. in the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Last week we conducted our 1st Annual Career night for our student-athletes here at Providence. The successful event was sponsored by our good friends and loyal supporter, Mr. Mark Mandell. Over 100 student-athletes got to meet and talk to over 30 successful alumni and field representatives in media, law, sports, and business just to name a few. This event provided our student-athletes with value insight into their professional career.
GO FRIARS!
Bob Driscoll
