PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll announced today that the College received a $170,000 gift from Joe and Sugar Calabria. Joe Calabria '65 designated this money to renovate the Friar men's basketball Hall of Fame located in PC's Alumni Hall.
"We are extremely grateful to Joe and Sugar for this generous gift," Driscoll said. "This gift will enable us to continue the extensive upgrades to our athletic facilities, which included the construction of the Concannon Fitness Center and Canavan Sports Medicine Facility. Our men's basketball team competes in one of the top conferences in the nation and a renovated Hall of Fame will help us to continue to recruit and compete at the highest level. It also is very important for our loyal fans to be able to enjoy the great history and tradition of Friar basketball."
This Friar Men's Basketball Hall of Fame will include trophies, pictures, jerseys and other memorabilia that showcases the tradition of Friar men's basketball.
"I treasured my years at Providence College," Joe Calabria said. "My wife and I have always been dedicated fans of Friar basketball. This Hall of Fame will be instrumental in documenting the legacy and the many special moments in Providence College basketball history. We believe that the men's basketball program has been an important part of the Friar community. The opportunity to give back to program and the College community is very important to us. I am thankful for the impact that the Dominicans and Providence College has had on my family."
Joe and Sugar have also established a $50,000 endowment to be used for renovations and upgrades for the Joe and Sugar Men's Basketball Hall of Fame.
The new Joe and Sugar Calabria Friar Men's Basketball Hall of Fame is scheduled to open in late spring 2008
