BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College men's hockey team defeated the University of Vermont, 4-0, Saturday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. Senior goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) posted the shutout with 20 saves and set a school record with his sixth career shutout. Senior co-captain Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) also led the Friars with two goals. The Friars improved to 4-6-2 overall and 4-3-2 in Hockey East. Vermont fell to 3-6-2, 3-3-3 in league play.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead at 14:39 of the first period when sophomore Greg Collins (Hingham, Mass.) ripped a shot from the top of the left face off circle that beat Vermont goalie Joe Fallon. Freshman Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) and junior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) assisted on the goal. For Mayer, it marked his first career point.

The Friars scored three times in the second period to take a 4-0 lead. Junior co-captain Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) scored from a tough angle at 6:08, while Rheault added the next two goals to give PC a four-goal cushion. Rheault's first goal came at 8:22 as freshmen Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) and Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) were credited with assists. The freshman duo also assisted on Rheault's second goal as Rheault was sent in on a breakaway and he was able to tuck the puck past UVM goalie Mike Spillane with 19 seconds left in the period.

For Sims, it marks his second shutout of the season as he also did not allow any goals on November 10, 2007 at Maine. Mario Proulx (1980-84) held the Friar career shutout record (5) until this season.

The Friars are back in action when they host Brown University on Tuesday, December 4 in the 22nd Annual Mayor's Cup. The game, which will be played at Schneider Arena, will begin at 7:00 p.m.
