PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced today that Providence College junior defenseman Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) was named Hockey East Player of the Week, while senior goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was tabbed as Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week. It marks the first time in his career that Taormina has earned the league's player of the week honors and it's the fourth time that Sims has been tabbed as the league's defensive player of the week.
Taormina and Sims were instrumental in leading the Friars to a pair of wins at No. 11 Maine. On Friday, November 9, Taormina scored a career-high two goals and added a career-best three assists to lead PC to a 6-2 win over the Black Bears. His short-handed goal in the second period proved to be the game winner and he also added a power-play tally in the third period. The following night, Taormina assisted on the lone goal of the game as the Friars completed the sweep at Alfond Arena with a 1-0 victory. Taormina, who has a four-game point streak, leads the team in scoring with 10 points (five goals and five assists).
Sims recorded his first win of the season Friday night as he stopped 17 shots in PC's 6-2 triumph. On Saturday, November 10, Sims made 22 saves and recorded his fifth career shutout to lead the Friars to a 1-0 victory. His fifth shutout tied a Providence College record, which was set by Mario Prouxl (1980-84). In addition, Sims is the only Friar goalie to record two shutouts at Maine's Alfond Arena as he also blanked the Black Bears on January 20, 2006. In all, he has three career shutouts against Maine.
The Friars' two wins over the Black Bears marked the program's first two-game sweep at Maine's Alfond Arena since November 8-9, 1985. The Friars are currently tied for first place in the Hockey East standings with a 3-2-1 league mark and a 3-5-1 overall record.
Providence College is back in action on Friday, November 16 when it hosts UMass Lowell at 7:00 p.m. The game will be aired live on Cox Sports.
