PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll has announced the opening of the Helen Bert Student-Athlete Lounge, located on the second floor of PC's Alumni Hall. Designed exclusively for use by Providence's student-athletes, the lounge features six computer workstations as well as a comfortable study area furnished with over-sized leather chairs. Construction of the lounge was made possible thanks to a $25,000 donation by the family of Friar legend Helen Bert.

"The ability to combine an academic study area with the ideals Helen Bert embodied is something that is really special, both for our student-athletes, and the continued legacy of Helen," Driscoll said. "Not only does this provide an additional academic area for us, but it also serves as a tangible reminder of all that Helen embodied. Her impact is still being felt today, and this stands as another testament to why Providence is such a special place."

Bert, who founded the women's athletics program at Providence College, worked as an athletic administrator at the College from 1971-88. She was widely known as a pioneer of female athletics. Bert's first job at Providence was serving as the coordinator of women's athletics. In 1974, she was promoted to assistant athletic director. She held that position until she was promoted to associate athletic director under Lou Lamoriello in 1982.

Under Bert's tutelage, 12 Division I varsity women's sports were established as well as the first athletic scholarships given to women's basketball players in 1975. Her programs gained regional and national attention and produced several All-Americans. Affectionately known as "The Original Lady Friar," she was the first woman inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
