Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's hockey team (17-13-4, 11-8-2 HOCKEY EAST) defeated the University of Connecticut (12-21-1/10-11-1) by the score of 5-2 at Schneider Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Friars pulled away with three unanswered goals in the third period after the score was knotted, 2-2, at the end of the second period. With the win, the Friars advance to the HOCKEY EAST Tournament for their fourth straight appearance. The Friars claim the third seed in the tournament and will face second-seeded Boston College in the semifinals on Saturday, March 4 at Northeastern's Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.

Seniors Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.), Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) celebrated their last game at Schneider Arena as each tallied a point in the win.

Sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) picked up from the third period of their last game at UConn and scored the lone goal of the first period. Classmate Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) swooped the puck around the net to an open Smith for her sixth goal of the season at 1:20. Keilch earned her seventh assist of the year on the play.

UConn picked up its offense with two straight Husky goals. Nicole Tritter netted a power play goal at 9:47, assisted by Alicia Romolla. At 12:02, Romolla scored her first goal of the season with assists from Kristen Russell and Jaclyn Hawkins. Exactly four minutes later, Laffin notched her 10th goal of the season and tied the contest 2-2. Smith and Thatcher earned assists on the power play goal.

Freshman Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario) netted her first career game-winner at 11:16 of the third period. Sophomore Cherie Hendrickson (Boxford, Mass.) and freshman Brittney Lomond (Dorchester, Mass.) assisted Normore on the goal. The Friars continued to pour in the offense when junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) recorded her 19th goal of the year at 16:57. Freshman Katy Beach (Middlebury Heights, Ohio) earned her fifth, while sophomore Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) earned her fourth assists of the season.

Fittingly, Payton ended the game with an empty goal. Freshman Brittany Simpson (Ontario, Canada) passed the puck to Laffin who slung the puck across mid-ice to Payton for the goal.

Providence went one-for-three on the power play and three-for-four on the penalty kill. PC outshot UConn 43-28 and held the Huskies to only three shots in both the first and third periods.

Senior goalie Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) recorded 26 saves in 59:22 minutes in net. Kaitlyn Shain posted a game-high 38 saves in 58:37 minutes of action.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, March 4 against No. 3 seeded Boston College in the 2006 HOCKEY EAST Tournament semifinals at Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.
