Box Score

STORRS, Conn. (November 5, 2005). The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Connecticut, 2-1, at Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The Friars fall to 16-13-4 overall and 10-8-2 in league action.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead after the first period when Natalie Vibert scored a goal at 4:55 assisted by Jaclyn Hawkins. The Friars were outshot 14-11 in the first period.

Both teams played strong defensively and did not allow goals. However, in the third period, both teams picked up offensively. After back-to-back penalties by junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Meredith George (Westwood, Mass.), UConn was able to capitalize on a 5x3 power play. At 9:29, Kristen Russell netted a goal which was set-up by teammates Vibert and Alicia Romolla. The Husky advantage increased to a 2-0 lead.

At 18:45, the Friars pulled senior goalie Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) for an extra attacker. Less than a minute later at 19:36, sophomore Kathleen Smith (Waterloo, Ontario) scored the lone Friar goal with assists from senior Katelynn Laffin (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Erin Normore (Cambridge, Ontario).

After calling timeout, Providence was unable to tie the score with the 24-second window, despite outshooting the Huskies 17-7 in the third period.

Providence went zero-for-six on the power play and six-for-seven on the penalty kill. Bugden recorded 28 saves in net for the Friars while UConn's Kaitlyn Shain posted a game-high 35.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, February 26 at PC's Schneider Arena in a must-win game against Connecticut. PC will celebrate its three graduating seniors in their last home-game at Schneider Arena. Face-off is slated for 2:05 p.m.
