Box Score

ORONO, Maine -- Third-ranked University of Maine (9-3-1, 3-3-1 Hockey East) scored twice in the second period, and goalie Ben Bishop made 30 saves as the Black Bears went on to the defeat the Providence College (4-10-1, 3-6-1 Hockey East) men's hockey team, 3-0, Friday night at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.

Both teams went scoreless in the first period as PC held an 8-5 shot advantage. The Black Bears opened the scoring at 3:44 of the second period when Brent Shepheard's wrap-around shot beat PC goalie Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.). After the goal, the Friars created several scoring opportunities, including junior Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) who skated in on a two-on-one breakaway with linemate Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.), but his shot from the slot was blocked at 7:59. Moments later, Rheault skated down the left win and fired a back hander that was turned aside by Maine goalie Ben Bishop. However, Maine added to its lead at 9:31 when Mike Hamilton converted from the bottom of the left face off circle off a feed from Billy Ryan.

The Friars had chances to get back in the game early in the third period when they had three power-play opportunities, but Maine thwarted PC's efforts. The Friars created several other opportunities, but they could not solve Bishop. Matt Duffy capped off the win with a power-play goal at 17:40, ending PC's streak of 31 consecutive penalty kills.
