Providence Tennis Opens Fall Season at Fairfield Doubles Festival

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Providence College women's tennis team opened the fall season at the Fairfield Doubles Invitational in Fairfield, Conn. on Saturday, September 10 in Fairfield, Conn. Competitors included teams from Stony Brook, Sacred Heart, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Fairfield, Rhode Island, and Albany.
The Friars' doubles team of senior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) and junior Jennifer Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) led the team, posting a 3-2 mark in the Pool A standings with victories over Fairfield, Sacred Heart and UConn. Bitetti and Daigle advanced to the finals, where they were defeated by Stony Brook, 8-4.
In Pool B play, freshman Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield, Conn.) and Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) posted a 1-3 record with a win over Holy Cross and losses to UConn, Fairfield and Albany.
Providence had two pairs competing in Pool C - senior Marissa Bigelli (Lincoln, R.I.) and junior Threse Griffin (Louisville, Ky.) as well as sophomore Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) and junior Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.). Bigelli and Griffin were defeated by Stony Brook and Fairfield, while Lyons and Lee posted a win over Rhode Island after losing to UConn.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, September 25 when they travel to Hartford for an 11:00 a.m. match against the Hawks.
