PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College finished 91st of 333 eligible Division I colleges and universities in the final 2004-05 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings released on June 29. For the Friars, it is their eighth top-100 finish in the 12-year history of the Cup. Of the 94 Division 1-AAA schools, the Friars were the sixth highest finishers. The NACDA Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors (NACDA), the United States Sports Academy and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Each national championship receives 100 points. New in 2005, the Directors' Cup only ranks the top-100 of the 333 eligible Division I colleges and universities.

Stanford captured the 2004-05 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup after scoring 1,238.75 points. Texas (1,074 points) and UCLA (1,067 points) finished second and third, respectively.

Providence received its 173.5 points based on the men's and women's cross country teams' finishes at the NCAA Championships in November and the women's outdoor track squad's finish at the NCAA Championship in June, as well as the women's hockey team's participation in the NCAA Tournament in March. The PC women's cross country team finished third and received 85 points while the men's team finished 21st and received 32 points. At the NCAA Outdoor Track Championship, the women's track team earned 44 points after finishing 29th. The women's hockey team, which participated in its first NCAA Tournament, earned 12.5 points.

Providence finished eighth among the 12 BIG EAST schools behind Notre Dame (16th - 788 points), Boston College (57th - 350 points), West Virginia (59th - 318.5 points), Connecticut (63rd - 276.5 points), Rutgers (66th - 266.75), Georgetown (74th - 233.5 points) and Villanova (75th - 228 points).

Last year, Providence finished 73rd of 327 eligible colleges and universities in the final NACDA Director's Cup Standings.
