Women's Tennis Ends Season on a High Note

Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated the Hartford Hawks, 6-1, on Wednesday, April 20. For the Friars, the victory snapped a six-match losing streak, and earned them their first win at home since October 12. PC was led by its three seniors, Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.), Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and Nicole Rodger (Newport, R.I.), each winning both their singles and doubles matches.
Providence swept the doubles matches with victories coming from junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) and Gilbride at No. 1 (8-3), Rodger and Christensen at No. 2 (8-2) and freshmen Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.) at No. 3 (8-0).
In singles competition, Providence captured all but one point. Earning W's at their respective second through sixth positions were Gilbride (6-0, 6-1), sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) (6-1, 6-2), Rodger (6-1, 6-3), Christensen (6-3, 6-2), and freshman Katherine Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) (6-1, 6-0).
Gilbride, one of the team's tri-captains, leaves Providence with 76 career victories in 168 matches played (.452). This year she lead her team with a total of 30 wins (17 singles, 13 doubles).
Rodger, another tri-captain, compiled 31 singles and 25 doubles victories over her four years at PC (.437). This season she finished second to Gilbride in singles wins with 12.
Entering her senior year, Christensen had totaled 11 singles wins and nine doubles victories. This season alone, she nearly doubled her career totals in both categories, turning in 11 wins in singles seven in doubles. She leaves Providence with 38 career victories (.330).
With the win, Providence closed out 2004-05 season with a 10-11 overall record, its best in three years.
