Women's Tennis Defeated by Huskies

Providence, R.I. - On Tuesday, April 13, the Providence College tennis team played host to UConn in their fourth home match of the spring season. The Friars were defeated, 7-0, extending their losing streak to five matches.

In singles competition, Providence lost all six matches in straight sets. Junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was defeated at the No. 1 position, while seniors Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) fell at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Freshmen Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.), Katherine Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) and Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.) were defeated their respective fourth, fifth, and sixth positions.

"This was a great opportunity for us to get our freshmen in against UConn's strong upperclassmen," said head coach Wayne Turner. "It was also a chance for us to look into the future of this program".

In doubles play, Providence's No. 1 duo, Bitetti and Gilbride, was defeated by a score of 8-3. At No. 2, Ruggeri and Hoffend dropped an 8-1 deceision, and at thrid doubles, Christensen and senior Nicole Rodger (Newport, R.I.) fell to their Husky opponents, 8-3.

"Unfortunately, the doubles scores didn't reflect our quality of play," Turner added. "We were competitive out there, but UConn just played smarter in the wind. We won a lot of points... we just didn't get the ones we needed to win matches."

With the loss, the Friars fall to 3-9 on the spring season (9-10 overall). Providence tennis returns to action on Saturday, April 16, when it hosts St. John's at noon.
