Women's Tennis Falls to Sacred Heart

Providence, R.I. - In its first spring match on the PC courts, the Providence College women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Sacred Heart on March 30. The Friars got off to a decent start, winning two-of-three doubles matches, but failed to keep the momentum going in singles play where they were defeated in four-of-six contests.

Both of PC's singles victories came in straight sets, as freshman Katherine Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) battled off Katelyn Kittredge at the sixth position, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5) and sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) defeated Darcy Shoop (7-5, 6-0) at No. 3. This was a sweet victory for Lee, as she was previously defeated by Shoop in the final round of No. 3 action at the New England Championships on October 17, 2004.

In doubles play, Providence's No. 1 duo, senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.), picked up their second consecutive win with an 8-4 defeat of Lauren Galatie and Pam Pillo. At third doubles, freshmen Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Karla Ruggeri Lincoln, R.I.) also grabbed their second straight doubles victory with an 8-4 win over Lissa Von Brecht and Katelyn Kittredge.

With the loss, Providence falls to 3-5 on the spring season (9-6 overall). The Friars return to action Saturday, April 2, when they host Villanova in an 8:30 p.m. Alumni Weekend match at Rally Point in Smithfield, R.I. Pre-match festivities will be held at McFadden's Restaurant & Saloon in Providence, R.I.
