Women's Tennis Goes 1-1 on the Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's tennis team was on the road this past weekend, with games at Seton Hall on Saturday the 19th and St. Peter's on Sunday the 20th. The Friars got off to a rocky start, failing to win a match against Seton Hall, but came back the following day to shut down St. Peter's, 7-0.

Against the Pirates, junior Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was the only Friar not defeated in straight sets, posting a 6-2 win over Viviana Figueroa, before dropping her second and third sets, 0-6, 0-6.

Versus the Peacocks, Providence was led by freshmen Katherine Lyons (Barrington, R.I.), Carly Hoffend (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Karla Ruggeri (Lincoln, R.I.), who earned victories at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles, respectively. Bitetti, senior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) and sophomore Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) also took home W's at the Nos. 1 thru 3 positions. In addition to the six singles wins, PC swept doubles play, with victories coming from Bitetti and Gilbride at No. 1 (9-7), Lee and freshman Therese Griffin (Louisville, Ky.) at No. 2 (8-0), and Hoffend and Ruggeri at No. 3 (8-0).

With the win, Providence improves 3-4 on the spring season (9-5 overall). The Friars return to action Monday, March 28, when they travel to Fairfield for a 1:30 p.m. match against the Stags.
