PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Chris Chaput's third period goal and Tyler Sims' career-high 40 saves lifted the Providence College men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 14 Maine on Friday, February 18 at Schneider Arena. The win coupled with a Merrimack loss allowed the Friars to clinch a spot in the Hockey East playoffs.

Providence (8-18-4, 3-13-4 Hockey East) ended a 16-game (0-12-4) winless streak in Hockey East action. PC's last win league play came on October 29 when it defeated UMass. Maine, which was playing its first game since February 5, fell to 15-10-4 and 10-5-4 in the league.

Chaput's goal, which was assisted by Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) and Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.), gave the Friars a 3-1 lead at 1:32 of the third period. The Black Bears made it 3-2 on a goal by Josh Soares as he pounced on a rebound right in front to record his eighth goal of the season at 11:26.

The Black Bears had a chance to tie the game as they went on the power play with 2:30 remaining in the third period. Maine pulled netminder Jimmy Howard for an extra skater, but could not score the equalizer as Sims earned his fourth victory of the season.

The Friars were outshot, 29-12, in the first two periods and 42-22 for the game. However, it was Providence that struck first with a pair of goals just 1:27 into the second period. Gajda opened the scoring at 00:53 with his fifth goal of the season. Moments later David Carpentier (Faribault, Minn.) gave the Friars a 2-0 lead with his third goal of the season. Carpentier took a pass from Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) at the left face-off circle and fired a high wrist shot over Howard's left shoulder. Howard finished with 19 saves.
