Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. -- Freshman defenseman Cody Wild (North Providence, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal with 1:23 left in the third period to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over UMass on Saturday, November 5 at the Mullins Center. The Friars (5-3 overall) improved to 5-1 in Hockey East marking the school's best start in league history. UMass fell to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Junior Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) carried the puck into the UMass zone, skated behind the net and slid the puck to Wild at the left circle. Wild fired a high wrist shot over Gabe Winer's shoulder to give PC a weekend sweep of the Minutemen. The Minutemen pulled Winer for an extra attacker, but could not score the equalizer.

Providence struck first at 4:49 of the opening period on a short-handed goal by junior captain Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.). Senior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) stole the puck at the PC blue line and pass it ahead to a streaking Zancanaro who skated in on a breakway and beat UMass goalie Gabe Winer to the glove side.

The Minutemen carried the play in the second period, but the opportunistic Friars increased their lead at 9:16. Freshmen Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) and Brad Cooper (Dallas, Texas) battled for the puck in front of the net, but it was senior James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.), who emerged with the puck right in front and recorded his third goal of the season. Mazzolini and Cooper were credited with the assists for their first collegiate points.

UMass cut the lead in half at 2:18 of the third period as Chris Davis collected a loose puck in front of the net and tucked a backhander past PC goalie Tyler Sims (Fort Worth, Texas). The Minutemen tied the game with 4:06 left as Cory Quirk scored off a rebound in front.

The Minutemen outshot the Friars, 34-20, as Sims stopped 32 shots. Winer finished with 17 saves.
