PROVIDENCE R.I. -- The Providence College women's ice hockey team skated past Maine, 4-3, on Sunday, November 13 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. Junior Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the third period to give the Friars the victory. Maine scored all of its goals on the power play. Providence improves to 4-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in HOCKEY EAST action.

Watrous opened the game up with a goal at 19:51 of the first period. Senior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) earned the assist on the play. Sophomore Jenna Keilch (Clinton Township, Mich.) scored her first goal of the season at 1:21 of the second period. Classmate Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.) was credited with her second assist of the season. At 6:52, Maine chipped at the lead with a power play goal that was assisted by Julie Poulin and Kelly Law. Brigitte Laflamme even the scored at the 9:30 mark, 2-2, with a power play goal. Katie Sunstrum was credited with the assist, while Poulin earned her second assist of the game.

Sophomore Kelli Doolin (Dorchester, Mass.) tipped in her first goal of the season and simultaneously snatched the advantage from the Black Bears. Junior Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) slapped a shot from the left face-off circle that reached freshman Brittany Simpson (Ontario, Canada). Simpson put her stick on it and Doolin slipped it into the net. Gigliotti earned her seventh assist of the season, while Simpson was credited with her second collegiate assist.

Vanessa Vani equalized the game, 3-3, with a power play goal at 5:09 of the third period. Vani was assisted by Poulin and Sonia Corriveau. However, at the 8:48 mark, Watrous ended the game the same way she started it and scored her second game-winning goal of the season. Senior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) and freshman Erin Normore (Ontario, Canada) assisted on the play.

The shots on goal favored the Friars, 36-28, as did the final score, 4-3. Providence went one-for-five on the power play, and killed nine-of-12 penalties.

Senior netminder Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) made 25 saves, while Genevieve Turgeon posted 32 saves in between the pipes.

The Friars will play game three of their seven-game homestand on Thursday, November 17 at PC's Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I. at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday, November 19 the Friars host Boston University at Schneider Arena at 2:00 p.m.
