PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In its first home match of the season, the Providence College tennis team was defeated by the University of Rhode Island, 6-1, on Wednesday, October 5. The Friars' one point came from sophomore Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) at No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, Providence's No. 1 duo, junior Jennifer Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior Sara Bitetti (Norwood, Mass.) tallied their sixth win of the season with an 8-3 defeat of Erin Fleming and Grace Hedstrom.
Lyons picked up PC's lone singles victory with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 defeat of the Rams' Emily Conant.
"Even though we didn't come out on top today, I really liked what I saw from Lyons, who grabbed a win after battling back from a first-set loss. And Daigle and Bitetti, who are always solid in doubles play," noted Head Coach Wayne Turner. "I just can't say enough about Daigle's intensity as an athlete. She is so competitive and so driven. She goes out there and gives her all, point after point. I'm really proud of her efforts today."
Providence tennis (1-1) returns to action Thursday, October 13, when they travel to Holy Cross for a 3:15 p.m. match against the Crusaders.
