CANTON, N.Y. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 5-3, at St. Lawrence on Saturday, October 15 at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. For the second consecutive night the Friars (0-2) were hurt by the power play as they allowed three goals on the man advantage.

The Saints (3-1) took the lead at 5:36 of the first period on a power-play goal by Shawn Fensel. St. Lawrence increased its lead to 2-0 at 13:29 on Mike Zbriger's first goal of the season, but the Friars responded 15 seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1. Senior Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.) skated in from the left faceoff circle and slid the puck past sprawling St. Lawrence goalie Justin Pesony at 13:44.

After a scoreless second period, the Saints regained their two goal advantage at 1:43 of the third period. Providence again cut the lead to one goal as Gajda tallied his second goal of the night. While short-handed, senior captain Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) fired a slap shot from the top of the right face off circle, which was saved by Pesony, but Gajda took advantage of the rebound to make the score, 3-2. St. Lawrence then scored the next two goals on the power-play to put the game out of reach. Max Taylor and Jared Ross each scored a goal just 25 seconds apart to take a three-goal lead. Junior Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season at 18:38 as he sprung himself free from a defender and lifted a high wrist shot over Pesony. Horan finished with one goal and one assist, while senior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) had two assists.

In goal, Friar rookie Stephen Ritter (Tenafly, N.J.) stopped a career high 45 shots in his collegiate debut. It marked the first time since the 2002-03 season that a Friar rookie had made 45 saves in a game. Pesony made 33 saves for the Saints.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, October 21 when they play their home opener versus UMass Lowell at Schneider Arena.
