Providence Tennis Tops Monmouth, 7-0

In its third match of the season, the Providence College tennis team shut out Monmouth, 7-0, on Saturday, October 8 at the Rally Point Raquet Club in Smithfield, R.I. The Friars won all six singles matches, as well as all three doubles matches en route to their second victory of the season.

In doubles play, Providence's No. 1 duo, junior Jennifer Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior Sara Bitetti (Norwood, Mass.) picked up their seventh win of the season with an 8-3 defeat of Ashleigh Johnson and Kaitlin Gallagher. At second doubles, junior Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) and classmate Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) defeated Kelly Shedelbower and Sarah Ragan, 8-3, while freshmen Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) and Meghan Gilroy (Fairfield Conn.) also grabbed a win with an 8-5 defeat of Laura Giuliari and Krista McCormick.

All six of PC's singles victories came in straight sets, as Daigle knocked off Ragan (6-1, 6-0) at No. 1 and Bitetti defeated Johnson (6-2, 6-0) at No. 2. Lee posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Guiliari at No. 3 while Rissolo tallied a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gallagher at No. 4. Finally, Gilroy shut down Shedelbower (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 while sophomore Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) beat Ashley Fornaro at the sixth position, 6-2, 6-3. The Friars (2-1) return to action Thursday, October 13, when they travel to Holy Cross for a 3:15 p.m. match against the Crusaders.
