Winter 2004-05

This fall we, the Providence College Softball team, have continued our longstanding tradition of getting involved with the community and helping in anyway we can. We lent our hearts and hands through many community service activities.

We kicked the Fall Semester off by helping the American Cancer Society in their fight against breast cancer. In October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we lent our support to the fight by joining the organization, Making Strides against Breast Cancer. This organization has been around since 1993, and is the American Cancer Society's leading event to raise awareness and money to fight breast cancer. We joined the past two million walkers, who have already raised 130 million through the organization. We are proud to have been part of that group of walkers for the past seven years, making this year our 8th year. It is a great tradition our team continually honors and supports. On October 17th we participated in the walk at Roger Williams Park. In addition to that we went around to the dorms and collected from our student body, raising more than we ever have before. We donated over $720 dollars to support Making Strides against Breast Cancer. We continued the tradition and walked a 5k path with thousands of other supporters.

We also lent our support to an event right here on campus. We supported the Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence, located in Warwick. The coalition worked with SOAR (Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships). The Providence College Sailing Team put together a Domestic Violence 5K walk around campus in support of SOAR and the RI Coalition for Domestic Violence. We would have loved to walk in the event, however, it was on the same day as the Breast Cancer Walk. We did what we could by raising money and spreading the word around campus. We were named as one of the sponsors of the walk with all proceeds supporting the charity.

Instead of just donating money to the Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence, we really wanted to do more. So, this year for our canned food drive, we decided to donate everything we received to the coalition. The Providence College Softball Canned Food Drive is another strong tradition we honor and maintain. This year marked our seventh (I am not positive...maybe you or coach Fulmer might know) annual canned food drive. We handed out flyers to many homes in the surrounding communities of Providence College on November 15th. The flyers contained information about the Rhode Island Coalition against Domestic Violence, and the dates and times for pick-up. On the 18th we collected all of the donations that people left. Thanks to the generous donation from the community, we were able to raise about 387 lbs of canned goods. All of the canned goods were donated to the Warwick center.

Arounds the Holidays, we definitely wanted to jump into another activity. We were fortunate to be a part of the very first annual Rhode Island Festival of Trees, which was in need of volunteers to assist with the Festival. The goal of the Festival was to raise money through charitable contributions and donations by hosting this annual holiday event, for all to enjoy. All of the proceeds from the event helped benefit the children of Providence City Arts. The Holiday Festival featured a public display of one-of-a-kind, professionally decorated trees; a showcase of handcrafted wreaths; an elaborate edible Gingerbread Village; musical entertainment; a festive gift shop; a Children's Activities area; and silent auctions on all of the trees.

We volunteered from 4-9 P.M. on December 5th at the Rhode Island Convention Center, downtown Providence. We did a variety of things like helping kids with arts and crafts activities, helping with main-stage performances, greeting people to the festival, helping at the Gingerbread Village, and much more. Not only did we volunteer our hearts and hands at the Festival, three of our teammates, generously and bravely, volunteered their voices. "The Softball Trio," named by the Holiday Festival Entertainment Services, became a last minute act on the 3rd, singing a holiday classic, "Silent Night." We all watched from the audience, so proud as they lifted our spirits as well as the rest of the crowd. They sang so well that they were invited to sing again the next night. It was a great experience and an honor to be able to be a part of the first ever Annual Holiday Festival of Trees. We would love to make this a tradition for years to come, and that includes the singing.

Our final community service activity of the season, like the Holiday Festival, was a new activity for us. We lent our help to the Mary House Ministry, located at the St. Patrick Parish, just a mile or two down the road from Providence College. The Mary House Ministry began in 1974 when a group of Sisters of Mercy and a lay woman known as Mary House became aware of the hunger of their neighbors. Moved by the needs of those people, they opened a small food pantry which still operates today. The Meal Kitchen began in 1986 when the staff of the Mary House realized there were few opportunities for individuals to get an evening meal. With help from surrounding organizations, a meal site was opened on Monday's at St. Patrick School. We were able to help by volunteering to assist at the Christmas Bizarre on December 4th, from 10 AM - 2 PM. We did a range of things from selling different items, helping sell food from the kitchen, working raffles, running games, cleaning up, and much more. All of the proceeds from the Bizarre went directly to the Meal Kitchen, to help feed the poor. It is an especially helpful way to feed more people in need during the holiday season. The great response we got from the people from Mary House Ministry and the other volunteers made it an amazing experience. Knowing where the proceeds were going made it even better.
