PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on March 8 that Providence junior forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Gomes, who earned All-BIG EAST Rookie Team honors in 2002 and All-BIG EAST Second Team honors in 2003, is the first Friar to be named to the First Team since Jamel Thomas earned the accolade in 1999. He also is the first Friar to be named to the All-BIG EAST First Team in his junior season and just the seventh Friar ever to receive First Team honors. The other six former Friars named to the All-BIG EAST First Team were Otis Thorpe (1984), Billy Donovan (1987), Eric Murdock (1991), Eric Williams (1995), Austin Croshere (1997) and Jamel Thomas (1999).

Gomes has led the Friars to a 20-7 overall regular-season record in 2003-04 and an 11-5 mark in BIG EAST play. He was named an ESPN.com First-Team All-American on Friday, March 5 and is the first Friar to earn first team All-America honors since Eric Murdock was named to the Wooden First Team and the Scripps Howard First Team in 1991. He also was named CBS SportsLine.com First Team All-American on March 8. Gomes also has been named a finalist for the Adolph Rupp All-America team and Player of the Year award, the Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year award and the Wooden Award Top 20 Finalist.
