Women's Tennis Defeats Binghamton

The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Binghamton University, 4-3, on Sunday, March 28 in Binghamton, N.Y.
In singles action freshman Jen Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) was losing to Melis Altinay, 4-1, in the No. 1 spot before retiring from the match, while sophomore Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) was defeated at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4, by Lyn Kushnirovich. Sophomore Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) was defeated by Janine Sadaka, 6-1, 6-1 in the third singles slot, while junior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) playing No. 4 singles defeated Vera Popova, 6-1, 6-2. The Friars won the last two matches of the day as junior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) defeated Sherri Stern, 6-2, 6-4, in the fifth spot and freshman Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) defeated Lauren Freel, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 slot.
In doubles action the Friars' No. 1 pair of Bitetti and Lapane defeated Altinay and Kushnirovich, 8-1, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Rodger dropped Sadaka and Freel, 8-5. In the final doubles match of the day Lee and Daigle beat Popova and Stern, 8-6.
With the win the Friars improved to 5-7 overall and 3-6 for the Spring season. Providence returns to action on Sunday, April 4 as they take on New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. at noon.
