Women's Tennis Defeats Rhode Island

The Providence College women's tennis team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 4-3, on Wednesday, March 24 in Kingston, R.I.
In singles action freshman Jen Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) defeated Erin Fleming, 7-5, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) was defeated at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0, by Jen Seide. Sophomore Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) earned the Friars' second victory on the day as she defeated Jess Collins, 6-1, 7-6 in the third singles slot, while junior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) playing No. 4 singles defeated Erin Dwyer, 6-1, 6-0. The Friars dropped the last two matches of the day as sophomore Marissa Bigelli (Lincoln, R.I.), in her first varsity match, lost to Becca Hedden, 6-4, 6-3, in the fifth spot and freshman Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) fell to Meredith Haas, 6-2, 7-6, in the No. 6 slot.
In doubles action the Friars' No. 1 pair of Bitetti and Lapane defeated Fleming and Seide, 8-6, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Bigelli fell to Collins and Dwyer, 8-1. In the final doubles match of the day Lee and Daigle beat Hedden and Haas, 8-3.
With the win the Friars improved to 4-6 overall and 2-5 for the Spring season. Providence returns to action on Saturday, March 27 as they take on Quinnipiac in Binghamton, N.Y. at 2:00 p.m.
