Women's Tennis Falls to Pittsburgh

The Providence College women's tennis team was defeated by the University of Pittsburgh, 5-2, on Tuesday, March 9 in Duck Key, Fla.

In singles action freshman Jen Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) was defeated by Laura Pegula, 6-7, 6-0, 2-6, at the No. 1 spot, while sophomore Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) fell to Becky Emmers at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0 and sophomore Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) fell to Annie Davies, 6-2, 6-4 in the third singles slot. Junior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) playing No. 4 singles defeated Hayley Hughes in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, to earn the lone singles victory on the day for Providence. The Friars dropped the last two matches of the day as junior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) lost to Emily Hughes, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, in the fifth spot and freshman Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) fell to Konita Jude, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 slot.

In doubles action the Friars earned two wins as the No. 1 team of Lapane and Bitetti defeated Pegula and Hughes, 9-8 and the No. 3 team of Daigle and Lee beat Emmers and Danielle Shuttleworth, 8-5. Gilbride and Rodger lost to Davies and Hughes at No. 2 doubles, 8-2.

With the loss the Friars drop to 3-4 on the season. Providence returns to action on Wednesday, March 10 as they take on Gulf Coast Univeristy in Ft. Myers, Fla.

DOUBLES:
1.  Lapane and Bitetti (PC) defeated Pegula and Hughes (UP) 9-82.  Davies and Hughes (UP) defeated Gilbride and Rodger (PC)    8-23.  Daigle and Lee (PC) defeated Emmers and Shuttleworth (UP)   8-5
