TROY, N.Y. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 4-3, at Rensselaer in a non-conference game on Wednesday, December 8 at the Houston Fieldhouse in Troy, N.Y.
Providence sophomore Chase Watson (Media, Pa.) opened the scoring at 9:34 of the first period as he converted a pass from classmate Jamie Carroll (Andover, Conn.) on a two-on-one rush. The Engineers responded at 15:49 when Jake Luthi scored on the power play to tie the game, 1-1.
In the second period, the Friars took a 2-1 lead on freshman Jon Rheault's fifth goal of the season. Rheault collected a pass from linemate Tony Zancanaro (Trenton, Mich.) and snapped a quick wrist shot past RPI's Jordan Alford at 8:54. Sophomore Bryan Horan (Farmington, Conn.) also assisted on the goal. The Engineers came back again and tied the game Vic Pereira's first collegiate goal at 11:17. Less than two minutes later, Providence struck again. Sophomore Dinos Stamoulis (Carle Place, N.Y.) fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line that was redirected by junior Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) at 12:53.
The Engineers wasted little time in the third period to tie the game as Kirk MacDonald scored from in close to make the score, 3-3. RPI recorded the game winner with 5:11 remaining when Scott Romfo pounced on a rebound to collect his first goal of the season.
The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, December 29 against Vermont at the Ledyard National Bank Tournament in Hanover, N.H.
