Volleyball Inks One Student-Athlete For 2005-06 Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College volleyball head coach Margot Royer has announced the signing of Florida-native Nonie Ferguson (Davie, Fla.) to a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College as a freshman with the Friars for the 2005-06 academic year.

"I'm really looking forward to having Nonie join our program next season," said Coach Royer. "With the departure of three seniors this year, I'm expecting her to step in and contribute to our team right away. She's a fit for our program in every way."

Ferguson, a 5-9 outside hitter comes to Providence from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where she spent the past year as a student-athlete under head coach Louise Crocco. Prior to that, she spent three seasons at Saint Thomas Aquinas under coach Lisa Zielinski. Ferguson also played for head coach Shelly Birkholtz of the Fort Lauderdale Juniors from 8th to 10th grade, and for head coach Brooke Penney and the South Florida Juniors during her junior season. This year, Nonie will likely play for the Boomers club team.

A four-year varsity starter through out her high school career, she helped her team advance to the state finals her senior season after they advanced to the regional finals her junior year. She was also a member of the team that advanced to the state semifinals her sophomore season, as well as the regional finals her freshman year.

Originally from the Chicago area, Ferguson comes to PC with a collection of awards as well. Ferguson was named to the Broward County All-Star team, as well as team MVP of the Rollins College Team Camp her junior year. She was also an honorable mention all-state selection her junior year. She is planning to receive first or second team All-State honors this season.

In addition to coaching various volleyball camps, Ferguson is a senior athletic member of the Young Republican Club and was on the Homecoming Committee for four years. A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she was also a four-year member of the student council. Born on May 31, 1986, she is the daughter of Norine and Patrick Ferguson, and has two younger brothers, Patrick and Michael.

Ferguson is expected to major in political science with a minor in psychology.
