AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 2-0, at Massachusetts on Saturday, October 30 in Hockey East action at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.
The Minutemen struck first as Matt Anderson converted on a pass from Garrett Summerfield right in front at 13:40 of the first period. The Friars had several chances to score as they had three power-play chances, but the Friars could not convert.
Providence came out stronger in the second period, but the Minutemen were just as strong as they outshot the Friars, 10-5. PC freshman Jon Rheault (Deering, N.H.) used his speed to create havoc for UMass with less than a minute left in the period. Rheault had a breakaway, but Gabe Winer made a pad save on the play. Seconds later, Rheault had a partial breakaway, but he was tripped and drew a penalty with 26 seconds left in the period.
However, UMass increased its lead to 2-0 as Summefield took a pass from Anderson and fired a slap shot from the left faceoff circle that eluded PC netminder David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) who was screened in front. Cacciola made 26 saves, while Winer earned the shutout with 20 stops.
The Friars will return to action on Friday, November 5 as they will play their first of two games against Wayne State at Schneider Arena.
