Women's Hockey Defeats Colgate in Season Opener, 6-2

HAMILTON, N.Y. (October 16, 2004) -- The Providence College women's hockey team opened its regular season with a 6-2 non-conference victory over the Colgate Raiders on Saturday, October 16, at Colgate's Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y.

Providence got on the scoreboard within the first 48 seconds of the game. Sophomore Sonny Watrous (Albuquerque, N.M.) stole a pass from Kate Wolgemuth in front of Colgate's net and fired the puck past Raiders' goaltender Rebecca Lahar.

Less than two minutes later, junior Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) netted a power play goal from senior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Watrous.

Thatcher scored her second goal of the game at the 11:02 mark of the first period to give the Friars a commanding 3-0 edge to lead off the second period. Thatcher's goal was assisted by sophomore Kristin Gigliotti (Sauquoit, N.Y.) and senior Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.).

Colgate found its first goal four minutes into the second period with a goal by Courtney Sekevitch at the 4:26 mark, assisted by Cassie Reid. Zimmerman matched the Raiders' lone goal in the second period with her own at 12:14 with an assist by Watrous.

Freshman Rachel Crissy (Naperville, Ill.), and Gigliotti added one goal apiece in the third period to end the game 6-2.

Providence held the shot advantage 25-17, including an 11-3 advantage in the third period. The Friars went 3-8 on the power play.

Senior goaltender Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) posted 15 saves, while Rebecca Lahar recorded 19 on the night.

Providence returns to Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. to complete the away-away series versus Colgate on Sunday, October 17.
