PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Ryan Gomes scored 27 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead Providence to a 62-56 win over Villanova on Wednesday.
Gomes' hot hand offset a poor shooting night from 3-point range for the Friars, who made only 7 of 28 3-point attempts.
Allan Ray led Villanova (10-6, 2-2 Big East) with 21 points.
Providence (12-3, 3-1) led by as much as 11 in the first half and early in the second half before Villanova went on a 18-5 run. Ray's short jumper with 7:19 left gave Villanova a 47-45 lead.
But Providence pulled away afterward, holding the Wildcats to just nine points while Gomes scored eight points in a 17-9 run. He was 10 of 14, from the field including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.
Marcus Douthit and Tuuka Kotti both added 10 points for Providence.
Providence led 34-27 at halftime. Gomes scored 13 points in the first half, while Allan led Villanova with nine points on three 3-pointers.
