Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) made 30 saves and graduate student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) scored two goals to lead the 14th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team to a 3-1 win over UMass Lowell on Friday, February 28 at Schneider Arena in Hockey East action.

After playing 39 minutes of scoreless hockey, Providence College notched the first tally of the game with 56 seconds remaining in the second period. Fregoe netted his team-leading 21st goal to break the scoreless tie. Senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) fired a pass from the right face off circle to a streaking Fregoe who redirected the shot past UMass Lowell goaltender Chris Davidson.

Fregoe opened the scoring in the third period when he scored off a rebound in front of the net at 3:57. The Friars took a three-goal lead when freshman James Pemberton (Cumberland, R.I.) blasted in a shot from the left point at the 6:04 mark. The River Hawks had been pressuring Schaefer all game and finally put the puck past the senior netminder at 7:52 as Danny O'Brien one-timed in a low shot off a feed from Ben Walter. UMass Lowell continued to pepper Schaefer with shots over the final seven minutes, but could not get any closer as the Friars improved their record in February to 6-0-2. It marks the first time PC has been undefeated in February since the 1988-89 season.

Davidson finished the game with 19 saves for the River Hawks.

Providence concludes its regular season tied for fourth place with Boston University as each team has 27 points. BU has one game remaining on Saturday, March 1 at Maine. If the Terriers win or tie against the Black Bears on March 1, BU will finish fourth and the Friars will open the HOCKEY EAST Quarterfinal Series at Boston, Mass. on Thursday, March 6. If BU is defeated at Maine on March 1, the Friars will host the Terriers on Thursday at Schneider Arena in the first game of the best-of-three Quarterfinal series.
