Women's Tennis Falls To Monteal, 6-1

The Providence College Friars were defeated by Montreal,6-1, on Saturday, February 22, in Burlington, Vt.

In singles action, Providence's No. 1 freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) lost to Melanie Beaulac, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 (tiebreak). PC's No. 2, freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) fell to Karine Mercier, 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 (tiebreak). PC's No. 3, sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) was defeated in straight sets by Marie-Claude Joly, 6-3, 6-1. Providence's No. 4, sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) fell to Maude Page in two hard fought sets, 7-5, 6-4. Sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) earned the lone victory for the Friars playing in the No. 5 slot as she defeated Marie-Eve Belanger, 6-3, 6-2. In the final singles slot PC's No. 6 freshman Sue Weaver (Far Hills, N.J.) was defeated by Emilie Greste, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles action, The No.1 team of Lapane and Bitetti fell to Beaulac and Mercier, 8-4, while the No. 2 team of Gilbride and Christensen defeated Page and Joly, 8-5. In the final match of the day Rodger and senior Katie Viola (South Hadley, Mass.) were defeated by Greste and Belanger, 9-8. in a tough match.
