PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) scored two goals to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over UMass on Saturday, February 1 in Hockey East action at Schneider Arena.
The Friars wasted little time opening the scoreboard as DiSalvatore rifled a quick shot from between the face off circles that beat UMass' Tim Warner just 46 seconds into the game. The Minutemen responded with three consecutive goals to take a 3-1 lead. Thomas Pock, Tim Turner and Greg Mauldin each scored for UMass in a span of 8:02. The Friars cut the lead to 3-2 as DiSalvatore scored his second of the evening and his 11th of the season at 18:21. Just 25 seconds later, senior Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) tied the game on a breakway at 18:46.
In the second period, the Friars were able to kill off 3:30 of a five-minute major penalty called on junior defenseman Jason Platt (Portola Valley, Calif.) and scored the game winner late in the period. Senior netminder Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) stopped the puck behind the net for junior Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) who made a long pass to a streaking Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) who beat Warner on a breakway at 18:56. The Friars sealed the win at 17:32 of the third period when Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) pounced on a rebound and fired his 15th goal of the season under the crossbar. The Minutemen pulled Warner with 1:03 for an extra attacker, but Schaefer was strong in net, making 29 saves, including 14 in the third period. With the win, the Friars ended a three-game home losing streak and moved within one point of UMass for fifth-place in Hockey East.
The Friars will return to action on Friday, February 7 versus UMass Lowell in Lowell, Mass.
