Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Brown, 4-1

The Providence College women's ice hockey team skated to a 4-1 victory over Brown in the ninth annual Mayor's Cup on November 29 at Schneider Arena in Providence, R.I..

Junior Mara Amrhein (Waukesha, Wis.) opened the scoring late in the second period as she floated a wrister past goaltender Katie Germain from the half-boards. Providence appeared set to take the lead into the intermission but Brown's Krissy McManus was able to jam the puck under sophomore goaltender Jana Bugden (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) at 19:34 of the second to knot the game, 1-1. The Friars tallied a quick goal at the 1:22 mark of the third as senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) notched her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season, on the power play, just under six minutes later to put Providence ahead, 3-1. Thatcher would finish the game off with an empty net goal with 10 seconds remaining for her second tally of the game.

Bugden started the game in net for the Friars and made 22 saves as Providence outshot Brown, 30-23. With the victory the Friars improve to 4-4-2 overall, while Brown falls to 3-4-0 overall.

Providence returns to action on Tuesday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. as they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on the No. 3 ranked Crimson of Harvard.
