Women's Tennis Competes at Eastern Collegiate Championships

Providence College No. 1 singles player freshman Jen Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.), the 15th seed in the tournament, reached the round of 16 of the Eastern Collegiate Tennis Championships on September 3-5 in West Point, N.Y. Playing in her first collegiate tournament, Daigle won her opening round match defeating Diana Webb of Fairfield, 5-7, 6-0,10-7. Daigle then fell in the quarterfinal round to Veronica Apostu-Efremov of Long Island University, 6-7, 7-5, 10-7.

At No. 2 singles, 20th seeded sophomore Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) had a bye in the opening round before falling, 6-3, 6-1, to Merve Koksal from Long Island University. In the consolation round, Lapane was defeated in the second round by Emily Hughes from the University of Pittsburgh. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) defeated Susannah O'Brien from the University of Vermont in the first round, 6-2, 6-1, before falling to Helen Magomedova of Rutgers, 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16. Junior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) playing at the No. 4 singles spot lost in the round of 32 to Ashley Petruzzi from the University of Connecticut, 6-1, 6-4. Gilbride made it to the quarter finals of the consolation bracket before falling to Erin Dwyer of Rhode Island.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of juniors Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) and Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) were defeated in the opening round by Patricia Gomez and Karen Hansen of Stoney Brook University, 8-2. Christensen and Rodger made it to the semifinals of the consolation round before falling to Estee Bartell and Natasha Bode of George Washington University, 8-2. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Beth Bryson (W. Springfield, Mass.) and freshman Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) lost in the quarterfinals to Jana Bartoloni and Susan Hyams of the University of Massachusetts.
