Women's Tennis Finishes Third at The New England Championships

Providence College finished third in the 2003 New England Women's Tennis Championships held last weekend in Burlington, Vt. No. 1 singles player, freshman Jen Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) won the championship match defeating Missy Crump of Holy Cross in a tough three set match, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0. Playing in her second collegiate tournament, Daigle won her opening round match defeating Kyle Erickson of New Hampshire, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. Daigle defeated Lauren Galatie of Seton Hall in the semi-final round in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

At No. 2 singles, sophomore Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) fell in the opening round, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to Pam Pillo from Seton Hall. In the fifth place play-off, Lapane was defeated by Jenna Kafferly from New Hampshire, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) defeated Jess Collins from the University of Rhode Island in the first round, 6-2, 6-2. In the semi-finals Bitetti defeated Andrea Suriano of Fairfield, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. Bitetti won Providence's second championship match of the day as she defeated Carrie Simmons of Holy Cross in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Junior Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) playing at the No. 4 singles spot lost in the first round to Kerry Trimmer from Holy Cross, 6-3, 6-3. Gilbride defeated Erin Dwyer of the University of Rhode Island, 6-3, 7-5, to earn fifth place in her bracket. Junior Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) had to withdrawl from her first round match against Susannah O'Brien from Vermont in the No. 5 singles bracket. Senior Beth Bryson (W. Springfield, Mass.) filled in for Rodger in the fifth place play-off match against Ashley Hill of Fairfield, 6-1, 6-0. Junior Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) defeated Megan Fonos of Seton Hall, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 6 singles first round match. Christensen was defeated in the semi-finals by Jess Pasay of New Hampshire, 6-0, 6-4. In the third place match Christensen fell to Alison Levy of Holy Cross, 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles action, the No. 1 team of Christensen and Bitetti were defeated in the opening round, 8-4, and then lost again in the fifth place play-off match, 8-1. The No. 2 doubles team of Gilbride and Lapane defeated the team from Holy Cross, 8-4, in the first round and the team from Fairfield in the semi-finals, 8-2. Gilbride and Lapane lost to Jenna Kafferly and Megan Breen of New Hampshire in the No. doubles championship match, 8-2. In the last doubles action of the day the No. 3 team of Daigle and fellow freshman Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) lost in the championship match to Lensey Dixon and Jess Pasay of New Hampshire, 8-7 (5).

The Friars will return to action the weekend of October 24-26 as they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take part the Regional Championships.
