AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team defeated UMass Amherst, 3-2, in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday, February 2 at the Mullin Center in Amherst, Mass. PC sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly (Imperial, Sask.) had two goals for the Friars in the victory.
The Friars opened the scoring with 5:56 remaining in the second period when PC senior Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) converted a feed in front of the net from junior Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.). Sophomore defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) picked up the second assist on the goal. The Providence lead was shortlived, though, as UMass pulled even with the Friars when Josh Hanson skated in all alone on PC's Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) and deked the PC goaltender to his backhand before flipping a shot into the top of the net. The Friars struck right back, regaining the lead when PC senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) carried the puck to the front of the Minutemen goal where sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly (Imperial, Sask.) beat UMass' Mike Johnson for a 2-1 Providence lead.
In the third period, Kelly added his second goal of the game, banging a rebound of Jon DiSalvatore's shot past a prone Mike Johnson to give the Friars a 3-1 lead. UMass pulled to within one goal at 3-2 when defenseman Sean Regan beat Schaefer on a four-on-four situation. Toni Soderholm and Josh Hanson assisted on the Minutemen goal.
Schaefer made 25 saves in the win for Providence while Johnson recorded 33 in the defeat. The Friars return to action on Friday, February 8 when they host UMass Lowell at 7:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
