PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated, 73-54, by Michigan State during a non-conference match-up on Friday, December 20 in Providence, R.I. MSU's Kelli Roehrig led the Spartans past the Friars with a game-high 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting from the field and a five-of-six performance from the free-throw line. Providence was led offensively by sophomore guard Michal Epstein (Rehovot, Israel).
The Friars got off to a slow start in the first half of play and trailed by 20 points at halftime (39-19). The Spartans shot a blistering 57.1-percent (16-28) from the field en-route to their 39 first-half points, and finished the game 26-of-46 from the field (56.5 percent). The Friars shot 40.0-percent from the field in the game (22-of-55) and were out-rebounded 37-18.
In the second half, the Friars outscored the Spartans, 35-34, and staged a rally to come within seven points (47-40) with 9:42 remaining in the game. Aside from Epstein's 15 points, sophomore Jessica Simmonds (South Orange, N.J.) was the only other Friar to reach double-figures with 10 points. Freshman guard Elaine McCants (Boston, Mass.) and senior guard Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) each finished with seven points. Each of McCants' seven points came in the second half.
Also reaching double figures for Michigan State were Syreeta Bromfield (16 points) and Kristin Haynie (10 points). Haynie added a game-high eight assists. Liz Shimek netted nine points for the Spartans and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. MSU improves to 5-4 overall on the season.
Providence (2-5) will travel to Rhode Island on Sunday, December 22 for a 12:00 noon in-state match-up with the Rams.
