PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 11th-ranked Providence College men's hockey team defeated Princeton, 8-1, on Sunday, November 3 in a non-conference game at Schneider Arena. Senior co-captain Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) led the Friars with four goals as PC improved to 7-0 on the season. The 7-0 start marks the first time in Providence College history that the Friars have started a season with seven consecutive wins.
Providence opened the scoring at the 12:50 mark of the first period on a goal by junior Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.). The Friars took a 2-0 lead at 16:15 on a short-handed goal by freshman Torry Gajda (Westfield, Mass.). After sophomore Jeff Mason (Northampton, Mass.) had cleared the puck, junior Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) beat his defender to the puck and found Gajda, who fired a wrist shot past Princeton's Eric LeRoux. The Tigers scored the only goal of the second period to cut the lead to 2-1. Mike Patton recorded his first goal of the season at the 12:05 mark.
The Friars erupted for six goals in the third period led by Rask who scored all of his four goals in a span of 7:55. Rask's four tallies marks the first time a Friar scored four goals in a game since Jon DiSalvatore (S. Windsor, Conn.) recorded four goals on November 10, 2001 against Northeastern. DiSalvatore's four goals also were scored in one period.
The Friar first line of Rask, DiSalvatore and Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) posted 12 points in the victory. Zingoni scored two goals, while junior Jason Platt (Portola, Calif.) and sophomore Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) each posted two assists. PC freshman netminder Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) made 22 saves to earn his third victory of the season. LeRoux and Trevor Clay also made 22 saves each in the loss.
The Friars return to action on Friday, November 8 versus Northeastern at Boston, Mass. at 7:00 p.m.
