Women's Tennis at New England Championships

Providence College No. 5 singles player sophomore Nicole Rodger (Lowell, Mass.) reached the semifinal round of the New England Tennis Championships on October 18-20 in Burlington, Vt. Rodger won her opening round match against Andrea Suriano of Fairfield University, 6-0, 6-3, before falling to the No. 1 seeded player in her bracket Melissa Levy from Holy Cross, 6-0, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, sophomore Katy Bednar (Marblehead, Mass.) fell in the opening round to Molly Moran of the University Vermont, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. In No. 2 singles action, the second seeded freshman Cheri Lapane (Reading, Mass.) lost to Missy Crump of Holy Cross, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, sophomore Molly Gilbride (Topsham, Maine) lost in the first round, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, to the top seeded Brittany Burns from Holy Cross, while No. 4 singles player freshman Sara Bitetti (Norwell, Mass.) lost to the second seeded Jenny Witter of New Hampshire, 7-5, 6-4. The No. 6 singles player sophomore Lindsey Christensen (Northboro, Mass.) was defeated by the second seeded No. 6 singles player Francesca DiBona of New Hampshire, 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles action, the second seeded No. 1 team of freshmen Lapane and Bitetti advanced to the semifinals by defeating Lauren Galatie and Darcey Shoop of Seton Hall, 8-3. They were defeated in finals by the first seeded team of Alexis Alexander and Ana Marie Mora from Hartford. The No. 2 doubles team of Bednar and Christensen defeated Jeanne Sampson and Tiffany Paul of Seton Hall, 8-6, before falling in the semifinals to Lensey Dixon and Jenny Witter of New Hampshire, 8-5. The No. 3 doubles team of Rodger and Gilbride were defeated by the second seeded team of Francesca DiBona and Debbie King from New Hampshire in the quarterfinals.

The Friars finished the tournament in sixth place with Holy Cross and Vermont placing No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Providence's next match is on Saturday, October 26 at the Regional Championships.
