The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by the University of Maine, 5-4 at Alfond Arena on Friday, January 4.
Maine opened the scoring in the first period as junior Martin Kariya scored on the power play at the 5:37 mark. The Friars tied the game at the 17:50 mark of the second period as sophomore Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) scored his second goal of the season. Sophomore Jon DiSalvatore (Windsor, Conn.) was credited with the assist as his backhanded shot was saved by Maine's goaltender Mike Morrison, but Zingoni capitalized on the rebound.
The Friars took a 2-1 lead at the 1:52 mark of the third period as junior Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) scored off assists from senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) and Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.). PC went ahead 3-1 at the 5:37 mark when Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) scored a short-handed goal. However, the Black Bears erupted for four straight goals led by Kariya's three third period goals. Kariya finished with four goals. DiSalvatore scored to cut Maine's lead to 5-4 with 33 seconds remaining, but the Black Bears held on for the win.
The Black Bears outshot the Friars, 44-33. Providence's junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) tied his career-high with 39 saves in the loss. Morrison made 29 saves.
