PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.) scored the game-winning goal in the 16th annual Mayor's Cup men's hockey game, giving the Friars a 4-3 overtime victory over Brown University.
The Friars (10-12-3 overall) had seemingly taken a 3-2 lead on sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly's (Imperial, Sask.) third goal of the season with 5:51 to play in regulation, but on a Brown dump-in, PC freshman goaltender David Cacciola (Burlington, Mass.) turned the puck over behind his net and was beaten by Brown's Adam Saunders just 1:35 after Kelly's go-ahead goal.
The two teams advanced to the overtime period, where Omicioli was able to score the game-winner. PC's Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) attempted to clear the puck out of the Providence zone, banging the puck off a Brown forward and to teammate Mark Suderman (Regina, Sask.). Suderman fed a streaking Omicioli, who scored a game-winner in a Mayor's Cup game for the second time in his four-year career. He scored the game-winning goal as a freshman, propelling the Friars to their only other cup title in the last four years.
Brown began the scoring in the first period, as Pascal Denis and Tye Korbl solved Cacciola early.
The Friars pulled to within one goal on sophomore defenseman Stephen Wood's (Sudbury, Mass.) power-play goal in the second period. PC tied the contest at 2-2 when sophomore forward Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) scored on a rebound for the Friars.
Cacciola earned his second win of the season in his fourth appearance as he recorded 29 saves. Brown's Yann Danis recorded 24 saves as the Friars ended the Bears' three-game win streak.
Providence returns to action on Friday, January 25 when they host Boston College at 7:00 p.m. from Schneider Arena.
