Swimming Award Winners And Captains Announced

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Head Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Coach John O'Neill announced the team's 2000-2001 award winners and the 2001-2002 team captains today.

Headlining this season's award winners is senior Lori Cosman (Newburgh, N.Y.) and senior Michael Frenza (Watertown, Conn.) who were named the women's and men's team MVP. Cosman is awarded the Cindi Luciani Award as the women's most valuable athlete for the third-consecutive year. This winter, Cosman broke Luciani's `90 school record for career dual meet points. Cosman finished her four-year career with 686 points. Frenza is named the Horace Bowden Award as the men's most valuable athlete for the second-straight year. He finished his career fourth on the men's all-time career points list.

Sophomore Michael Bien (North Reading, Mass.) and freshman Bridget McKenna (Narragansett, R.I.) were named the Most Improved Male and Female Athletes, which honors those athletes who have improved the most in their specialty. Sophomore Amanda Pymm (Port Washington, N.Y.) was honored with The Sears Diving Award which honors that diver who makes outstanding contributions to the sport of diving at PC.

The final awards are The David Hardy Coach's Award which is presented to a male and female swimmer who exhibits the qualities of loyalty, dedication, good sportsmanship and outstanding effort - both academic and athletic. This year's award winners are senior Maggie Singler (Maplewood, N.J.) and sophomore Thomas Darrow (Cranston, R.I.).

Concluding the evening was the naming of the captains for the 2001-2002 season. Leading the women's squad next year are three seniors-to-be: Allison Buckley (Chelmsford, Mass.), Lee Barnum (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Nicole Mancini (Fall River, Mass.). The men's team will also have three seniors-to-be as captains next winter. They are: David Applegate (Wallingford, Conn.), Keith Chobot (Randolph, N.J.) and Mike Maloney (Plainville, Mass.).
