PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - John Linehan scored 12 of his 14 points in the final 7:24 as Providence beat St. John's 75-63 Saturday night.
Erron Maxey had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Providence, which is off to its best start in the Big East with a record of 7-2.
Maris Laksa added 13 points and Karim Shabazz finished with 11 points and nine rebounds for Providence (16-5).
Sharif Fordham's 14 points led St. John's (12-8, 6-3).
Linehan also limited St. John's leading scorer, Omar Cook, to five points, 11 below his average.
St. John's erased an early six-point deficit with an 18-7 run and led 31-25 at halftime.
Donald Emanuel's layup at the start of the second half gave St. John's its largest lead of the game, 33-25.
Providence countered with a 25-8 outburst for a 50-41 lead.
Cook scored five points and Reggie Jessie added a free throw at 6:51 as the Red Storm closed within 52-49.
But Linehan shot 8-for-10 from the foul line down the stretch to seal the win. Providence finished 26-for-36 from the line.
St. John's, which shot 31 percent in the second half and 36 percent overall, converted 18 of 25 free throws.
