Women's Basketball Defeated At Virginia Tech, 71-64

BLACKSBURG, VA. -- The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Virginia Tech, 71-64, on Wednesday, February 21st at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.
Providence senior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) led the Friars with 11 points and freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) and junior Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) added 10 points in the defeat.
The Friars trailed the Hokies (18-7/9-5 BE), 33-28, at halftime after leading the contest, 19-18, with 7:39 remaining in the half. PC took a one-point lead in the second half when Vozab hit a fast-break layup to put PC up, 43-42, with 12:27 remaining.
The two teams were knotted on the scoreboard three times after PC took the one-point lead and then sophomore Andrea Horvath (Sopran, Hungary) hit a jumper to put the Friars up, 55-52, with 7:14 remaining to play. The Hokies then ran off a 13-0 run to lead, 65-55, with 2:40 remaining. Senior Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.) hit a jumper to stop the run but Virginia Tech added four free throws in the last two minutes while the Friars managed just a Vozab three-pointer and a Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.) put-back at the buzzer to end the contest.
The Friars return to action on Saturday, February 24th when they travel to Villanova University to face the Wildcats.
